Water supply by area in Hyderabad (ranked)

How dependent is each area on borewells and tankers versus a reliable piped supply? Lower scores mean heavier tanker/borewell reliance, especially through peak summer.

How to read this: all 111 areas are scored 0–10 for water security from HMWSSB piped-water coverage and CGWB groundwater data, generalised to the locality. Every score is honesty-labelled — E Estimated (real data generalised to the locality) or J Judgment (analyst call, or only confirmable on a site visit). These are zone-level estimates, not project audits. For a project-level, personalised verdict, get your report.

Why water security varies across Hyderabad

Hyderabad is India’s most groundwater-stressed major city. The Central Ground Water Board classes 26 administrative units across GHMC, Rangareddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri as ‘critical’ or ‘over-exploited’, and water-tanker bookings hit a record ~3.36 lakh in May 2025 as borewells ran dry.

The split is geographic. The fast-built western IT belt — Kondapur, Madhapur, Manikonda, KPHB — leans hardest on borewells and tankers while the piped HMWSSB Krishna/Godavari grid catches up with construction. Older core-city localities on the established municipal grid tend to be steadier through summer.

Water security in Hyderabad — FAQs

Which Hyderabad areas have the worst water security?

On this zone-level estimate the highest-caution areas are Kollur, Ameenpur, Beeramguda, Gachibowli, Gandipet (lowest scores in the table above). These are baseline estimates — confirm the exact street on a site visit.

Why does Hyderabad have a water problem?

Rapid construction on the western corridor has outrun the piped supply, so many areas depend on borewells over an over-exploited aquifer (26 units are ‘critical’ or ‘over-exploited’ per CGWB). In peak summer, borewells drop and tanker demand spikes — a record ~3.36 lakh bookings in May 2025.

Which areas rely most on water tankers?

The high-growth western belt — Kondapur, Madhapur, Manikonda, KPHB and nearby ORR layouts — sees the heaviest tanker dependence, because population and construction have outpaced the piped grid.

Is piped (Krishna/Godavari) water better than borewell?

For reliability, yes — an HMWSSB piped connection is far steadier through summer than a borewell over a falling water table. Always confirm which one a specific flat actually has.
